EN 18031 RED Network Security Explained

In May 2024, the European Union officially released the draft final version of the EN 18031 series of cybersecurity standards and widely consulted member states. The standards were officially approved on August 1, 2024 .

However, the EN 18031 series of standards still need to be finally approved by the EU and included in the Official Journal of theEuropean Union (OJ) after publication before they can formally become harmonized standards that meet the requirements of the RED Directive.

This includes, but is not limited to, the following products:

- Laptops: laptops connected to the Internet via Wi-Fi to browse the web, etc.

- Smartphones: Mobile phones connected to the Internet via a mobile network or Wi-Fi to make calls, browse the web, use apps, etc.

- Smart TVs: TVs connected to the Internet that can stream video, browse online content, and have apps and smart features.

-Smart Cameras and Surveillance Systems: cameras connected to the Internet for home security monitoring or other uses.

-Smart wearable devices: e.g., smart watches, health trackers, etc. that transmit health and exercise data over the Internet.

- Smart home devices: including smart lamps and lanterns, smart sockets, and smart temperature control systems that can be remotely controlled via the Internet.

- Smart refrigerators: with Internet connectivity, they can help users manage food inventory, view recipes, etc.

- Smart security system: including smart door locks, smart alarm systems, etc., which can be remotely monitored and controlled via the Internet.

- Smart Kitchen Equipment: for example, smart coffee maker, smart oven, etc., which can be remotely controlled via the Internet.

-Bluetooth headset: supports access to address book or location information.

1. Which products need to be compliant?

- For models that have not been shipped, products shipped after the enforcement date (2025-08-01), complete testing and obtain a certificate as required.

- If the product has been shipped and needs to be shipped after the mandatory date (2025-08-01), complete the testing and obtain the certificate as required.

- Already shipped, the products sold in the EU market, the mandatory implementation date (2025-08-01) after the shipment is no longer required: do not need to test and certify according to the new requirements.

2、Products have done EN 303 645, do they still need to comply with RED 3.3d/e/f?

- The product has already done EN 303 645, and needs to obtain NB certificate after supplementing the difference test of EN 18031 on this basis to meet the compliance requirements.

3、How is RED 3.3d/e/f issued?

- After the test is completed, the test report is issued and submitted to the NB organization for issuance of certificate, RED 3.3d/e/F certificate can be issued alone, or together with the original EMC/Safety/RF certificate.
